Activities

Since its creation in 1920, Somef has always been a reference in the high added-value  waterways logistics : river transport, river-sea transport, trimodal handling and logistical services adapted to its customers’ needs.
Today, being part of the European Group CFNR network (its major shareholder), to strengthen its leader position in its historically region,  Somef is constantly developing its know-how in Belgium, in river Meuse, Sheldt, Rhein Basin and moreover  in Western Europe and across Nord Sea.
River transport stills the core activity of the company. In order to optimize its services to clients, Somef has its own fleet :

  • 4 pushers
  • 7 barges dedicated to bulk freight

 

Somef can also draw on vessels belonging to CFNR.
From Liege, and linking with Antwerp and Amsterdam ports, Somef  is also a reference in river-sea transport. Using coasters specially designed to navigate at sea as well as on rivers and canals, with capacities varying from 1000 to 2000 tons, Somef organizes transport operations to various ports in Ireland and UK. On request, Somef also serves Scandinavia and the Baltic, the French Atlantic coast and the northern Spanish peninsula. The river-sea transport avoid any transshipments in large sea ports and is particularly adapted for small cargoes and special products.

Handling and industrial services complete naturally river and river-sea Somef’s transport activities. High added-value handling activities are mainly operated in two operational sites:

  • Monsin and its covered wet dock
  • Quai du Val in Seraing

Major player in its field

integrated industrial logistics, Somef has also developed skills in essential port services :

  • agency in customs
  • ship agency : back office, technical and medical assistance for the shipping crews during vessels stop. The company has a chartering office located in Charleroi.
